When I noticed that Dave McKean, a well-known illustrator for Batman and many other comics, illustrated this book, I knew I had to check it out. Richard Dawkin's The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True makes the argument that reality is often just as magical as myth and science fiction. Each chapter poses a thought-provoking question, such as "When and How Did Everything Begin?" and "Are We Alone?" and covers myths, conspiracy theories, and legends that the human race has used for centuries to answer these questions. Finally, each question is answered by scientific explanations. Each chapter is beautifully illustrated comic book like illustrations. The Nest, by Kenneth Oppel, is an original and suspenseful psychological thriller written for middle-grade students. Put this on the "must read" list for fans of Neil Gaiman's Coraline. Steve has always struggled with anxiety. However, since his baby brother was born with a congenital defect he’s become even more anxious. Then Steve starts having strange dreams about the wasps who are building a nest outside his house. Are they real or imagined? Can they actually fix the baby like they promise? This quiet yet emotionally haunting, beautifully written book has won numerous awards, including the Caldecott Award for Jon Klassen's sparse, moving illustrations. |
